In the 25th century, under the leadership of the League of Peoples, war and crime are a thing of the past and life is held sacred. That is, as long as you're healthy and beautiful. But those who are deformed, flawed or misfit in any way are destined - or is "doomed" a better word? - to become Explorers, crews assigned to probe worlds so hostile, the chances of returning are somewhere between slim and none.

A qualified member of the expendable Explorer Corps due to her untreated facial blemish, Youn Suu sets out on a standard suicidal mission. Along with her partner, Tut, Youn is tasked with investigating a sudden infestation of the Balrog--a sentient red moss that can form parasitic, symbiotic relationship with its host--on the home world of the Cashlings.

The mission takes a turn for the worse when Suu is infected with the Balrog. But just before all is lost, Suu and Tut are rescued from the planet by legendary Expendable Admiral Festina Ramos. Aboard an Outward Fleet starship, they find that the Balrog is far more intelligent and sinister than they ever could have imagined. It is only then that the scope and danger of this nightmare is truly revealed.

Radiant League of Peoples Book 7 eBook James Alan Gardner

This was a book suggested to me by one of the book lists. I don’t remember what the book cost, but in retrospect, I would have paid the same price as a book by one of the ‘big name’ authors. This didn’t really sound like it would be as complex of a trilogy as it tirned out to be. Mixing magic and a post-apocalyptic world where the ‘haves and have-nots’ of humanity are divided in more than just wealth. I admit I am glad I read it when the trilogy was finished as, when a storyline and the characters drag me into their world (figuratively speaking) as these did, don’t like waiting. I guess I’m not a very patient oerson anyway.

I don’t really like reviews with either plot recaps or spoilers, but there are some undead in this series. I am NOT a fan of undead, as in zombie-like creatures running around each night. In this over-arching storyline, there is a reason for their inclusion other than to terrify. There are reasons why the ghosts exist also.

This trilogy is not without flaws, but I read the books back-to-back late into the night. I certainly recommend this book — and the trilogy — to nont only those who usually read about ghosts and undead, but those like me that usually avoid them The main character of the first book, and the second protagonist acquired along the way, are excellent studies in strong female young adults who come from vadtly different backgrounds yet must work together.

Recommended not just for young adults, but for adult readers as well.

Radiant League of Peoples Book 7 eBook James Alan Gardner Reviews

From a quiet, wooded retreat in Ontario Canada, Karina Sumner-Smith rebelliously ignores the trends in YA literature. She is as fierce as any of her powerful, determined protagonists while defending her right to publish without including the standard, tired tropes.
Upon finishing this book, readers will feel radiant. It is an uplifting tale of overcoming vast differences to find commonalities and friendship. It may be a debut novel, but the Nebula-nominated author was already many rungs up on the craft ladder and with each project reaches new heights. Xhea has no magic in a land and sky full of it. Floating cities harbor the gifted magic users and to the Lower City fall the dregs, its people living the best they can in a harsh environment. Completely non-magical people are unheard of, but Xhea has one gift that stands between her and starvation she can see ghosts. The gritty, harsh reality of her young life would overcome most, but she’s developed a distinctive toughness to compensate and somehow survive. The breathe-of-spring, living ghost Shai enters her life with devastating consequences and the unfolding story of their friendship sings. Highly recommended. The only complaint? Their names seemed too closely related and could cause some confusion Xhea and Shai.
We are introduced to the world of Radiant through the eyes of Xhea, an unreliable narrator filled with bias, prejudice and a thick, brittle coating of insecurity and pride. In a world of the very rich and the very poor, Xhea is at the very bottom, one of the few - if not the only - who possess no natural magic. Instead she is forced to buy it, like a drug.

Magic gives color to her grey, unhappy life and makes her feel, for a time, normal, as if she were just like everyone else. But Xhea is not like everyone else, and as far from normal as you can get. Not only does she have no magic, she can see ghosts. More than just see them she can talk to them, communicate with them, banish them.

With the help of one ghost in particular Xhea will do more than just talk. Together they'll change their world.

Xhea's story isn't given to us in an info-dump or with lengthy exposition, instead it's doled out slowly, allowing us to piece the truth together as we get to know the character. The world is given the same careful treatment, Sumner-Smith has made a world that feels both fantasy and post-apocalyptic at the same time. The slums of her city feel dirty, and when we visit the of towers, we see their beauty and wonders through Xhea's eyes.

The relationship between the ghost - Shai - and Xhea feels natural and unforced. They aren't pushed into liking each other because the author makes them; in fact, there's very little love lost between the pair at the beginning of the book. They develop like real people, reacting to real events, and the emotions they go through feel genuine.

It's a slow story that takes its time, letting us explore both characters and setting while the plot is handled much like a mystery with just enough information given to the Xhea reader at any one time, allowing you to make your own guesses as to what will happen next. It doesn't end on a cliff-hanger but it is one of a trilogy. You could easily read it as a stand-alone, but if the sequels hold up to the same writing and story telling I'll be picking them up.
